APTA & FSBPT Collaboration

Moving forward together

FSBPT and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) each have unique missions , purposes and roles to play in the physical therapy profession.

Missions

    To protect the public by providing service and leadership that promote safe and competent physical therapy practice.

  • APTA

    To improve the health and quality of life of individuals in society by advancing physical therapist practice, education and research, and by increasing the awareness and understanding of physical therapy's role in the nation's health care system.

    Membership organization of 53 jurisdictions.

    Membership organization of more than 90,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and students.

Continuing competence

Continuing competence is one major area in which the FSBPT and APTA both have roles and responsibilities. Together, we have developed documents on issues surrounding continuing competence.

APTA encourages the use of the FSBPT Coursework Tool (CWT)

In 2008, the APTA Board of Directors passed a motion to encourage chapters in interactions with their jurisdictions, to advocate for the use of the Federation’s CWT for use in evaluating the substantial equivalency of foreign educated physical therapists (FEPTs).

This action was in response to a request from the FSBPT Board of Directors to support the CWT. In evaluating the FSBPT’s request, the APTA established a work group to review the coursework tool and its benefits. The work of this group resulted in the motion passed by the APTA Board of Directors.

We believe that unified promotion of the use of the CWT will benefit both the public and the profession by creating more consistency in the evaluation of foreign educated physical therapists’ equivalency. The CWT is the only known tool that has been through an external validation process as well as internal validation and reliability studies.

APTA and FSBPT staffs have already met to develop some strategies for implementing this motion. The motion is a clear demonstration that, while APTA and FSBPT have differences in their mission and focus, there are many opportunities for collaboration for the benefit of the profession and the consumer of physical therapy services.
