Thank You for Participating in the Member Survey

Thank you to all those who participated in the Membership Survey. We had a great response rate with 42 percent of membership completing the survey. We randomly selected two members to receive the incentive of a $250 gift card. The incentive went to one member in Iowa and another in Georgia. A membership task force will meet in February to review the results.

Two States Opt into the Alternate Approval Process

In January, Alabama and Maine became the ninth and tenth states to opt into the Alternate Approval Process (AAP). Under AAP, when an applicant who is a graduate of a CAPTE accredited program registers for the NPTE®, FSBPT will make the candidate eligible to sit for the NPTE provided that the candidate meets all NPTE eligibility requirements. Under AAP, FSBPT also handles the review of all requests for testing accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Contact FSBPT if your jurisdiction is interested in opting into AAP.

oPTion Has Record Year of Takers in 2018

oPTion® is the FSBPT developed online self-assessment tool designed for physical therapists to both affirm their knowledge of physical therapy general practice and identify opportunities for professional growth. Takers complete oPTion’s multiple-choice questions—drawn from realistic clinical cases requiring the application of knowledge—online and on-demand. The $49 fee supplies detailed performance and feedback reports to the taker.

2018 saw a 150 percent increase in oPTion registrations over 2017.

Currently twenty-three jurisdictions award continuing competence/education credit for completion of oPTion. When member boards promote awareness of oPTion to their physical therapy licensees, interest in the tool increases significantly. Contact FSBPT staff for resources and assistance to encourage the use of oPTion in your jurisdiction.

Spotlight on Member Resources: Duty to Report Trifold Brochures for Licensees

Every physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensee has a responsibility to act in a professional manner. Licensees also have an ethical, and sometimes legal, duty to report to the board practitioners that are incompetent, unprofessional, or unlawful. This brochure may be customized to your jurisdiction—with your mission statement, name, address, and contact information—and distributed to licensees. Take action to help your licensees understand the public protection associated with reporting an individual that is unable to practice safely, has engaged in unprofessional conduct, violated laws or rules, or committed unethical practices. This brochure, along with other helpful resources, is available on the FSBPT website.

What I Learned at Work this Year, Gates Notes, December 29, 2018

Bill Gates concluded 2018 with some thoughts on the status of global health.

"For most of human history, we have been focused on living longer by fighting disease and trying to grow enough food for everyone. As a result, life spans have gone up dramatically. Technology has played a key role in that through vaccines, medicines, and improved sanitation.

"We still need a lot of innovation to solve problems like malaria or obesity, but we are also going to be focusing more on improving the quality of life. I think this will be the thrust of many big breakthroughs of the future. For example, software will be able to notice when you’re feeling down, connect you with your friends, give you personalized tips for sleeping and eating better, and help you use your time more efficiently."

CCHP Sees 2018 Telehealth Gains in Medicaid, Interstate Licensure, mHealth Intelligence, December 18, 2018

The PT Compact was referenced in this article covering increases in interstate licensure compacts.

“According to the CCHP report…active areas of legislation in 2018 included bills defining which healthcare providers (such as social workers and advanced practice nurses) could use telehealth and telemedicine, and those allowing states to join telehealth-friendly interstate licensure compacts for physiciansnursesphysical therapists and psychologists.”

Large-Scale Study Finds Connection Between Early Physical Therapy and Lower Opioid Use, PT inMotion News, December 14, 2018

“The evidence of physical therapy's potential to make a difference in the nation's opioid crisis continues to mount—this time, by way of a study in JAMA Network Open, which concludes that for patients experiencing back, knee, neck, or shoulder pain, a visit to a physical therapist (PT) early on can reduce the chances that they'll take any opioids for the condition. And among those who do wind up taking opioids during the episode of care, researchers identified an association, albeit less strong, between early physical therapy and reduced number of pills taken for 3 of the 4 conditions.”
