Changing Hats: Conflicts Between Professional Interests and Public Protection in Board Decision-Making

August 25, 2020 | 3:00 p.m. ET

Speaker: Rebecca Allensworth

A licensing board's mandate—to protect the public—can conflict with a profession's interest in maintaining its identity, autonomy, pay, and prestige. This potential for conflict is problematic because most boards are dominated by members of the very profession they must regulate; often members have spent years advocating for their profession through an association. The presentation will identify blind spots and problem areas for board members hoping to "change hats" and truly serve the public as a board member.

Using the Board Assessment Resource (BAR) as Part of Strategic Planning

October 14, 2020 | 3:00 p.m. ET

Speakers: Steven Scherger and Erin DeTomaso

This session is a case study example of how using the information from the FSBPT BAR can improve board performance as well as individual board member knowledge and engagement. The Minnesota Board of Physical Therapy had used the early framework of the BAR to assess board performance during strategic planning to improve operations, orientation of board members and staff, and retention of information. As early adopters of the BAR, this webinar will share the board's experience regarding how the BAR can complement strategic planning and allow board members to be more informed and engaged.

Components of High Quality Telehealth: Now and in the Future

October 27, 2020 | 7:00 p.m. ET

Don’t Cross That Line! The Regulator’s Role in Prevention of Boundary Violations

November 4, 2020 | 4:00 p.m. ET

Speakers: Susan Paul and Leanne Loranger

Boundary violations are not new within physiotherapy regulation. Conduct once perceived as acceptable is increasingly viewed negatively as societal expectations regarding professional conduct have evolved.

How can regulators proactively help registrants understand the principles of professional boundaries, recognize and reset boundaries when they have been blurred and avoid significant violations? Why should state boards consider getting upstream on the issue of boundary violations? What can be learned from the experience of one physiotherapy regulator that faced major legislative changes related to this issue?

The session will provide food for thought for state boards that are considering addressing this risk.
