Quick facts about the NPTE

  • Why the exam was developed

    The NPTE was developed to measure knowledge and abilities required of entry-level physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs).

  • What types of questions are asked

    The exam consists of objective, multiple-choice questions covering the major areas of physical therapy. The PT exam includes 250 items and the PTA exam includes 200 items.

  • Who developed the exam questions

    Committees comprised of PTs and PTAs develops them based on national analyses of the tasks that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants perform.
