National Physical Therapy Exam: "The Final Hurdle"

Want to share information about the NPTE with your students? We have a PowerPoint presentation designed for educators. This valuable resource is designed to provide educators with detailed information on the NPTE and is accessible through the educators' login, right on your dashboard under resources. The presentation covers the purpose of regulation and the licensing exam, the development of the NPTE, and NPTE administration. Finally, it has some useful tips for candidates! Please leverage it in your classrooms to help your students.

This Quarter's Question: What is the School Report Update Schedule?

Understanding how school reports are updated is crucial for staying informed about student performance and progress. The data behind school reports includes students in a cohort and their exam scores. This information is refreshed eight times per year following each exam administration, which ensures that the information is up-to-date and reflective of the most recent exam results.

We post the schedule for these updates on the school dashboard, making it easy for educators and administrators to keep track of when new data will be available. If schools make any changes to a cohort, such as adding or removing students, these changes will be reflected in the reports after the next scheduled update. This means that all reports will automatically update according to the schedule as additional students take their exams.

By understanding this update schedule, schools can ensure that they are always working with the most current data, allowing for better decision-making and more effective student support.

Free Tool for Candidates to Improve Their Exam Prep

In April of 2024, FSBPT began providing free access to the FifthTheory Test Mastery Inclusion program to candidates who were not successful on the NPTE. We are excited to announce that free access to this program is being extended to NPTE candidates for 2025 including any students currently in your program.

FifthTheory is an independent firm with expertise in helping test-takers become aware of and develop the test mastery mindset. This program allows students to identify their strengths and weaknesses regarding their test-taking skills, which can significantly improve preparation strategies and reduce exam-related anxieties. During the evaluation period last year, 64% of candidates who accessed the program reported that it helped them prepare for the NPTE.

We encourage all students to take advantage of this free program and enhance their test-taking skills. Please share this resource with students today!

Participate in the 2025 NPTE Reference Expansion Task Force

FSBPT will convene a task force to provide guidance in expanding the types of reference resources used to support NPTE Items. The meeting will be held from Friday to Sunday, October 3–5, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia.

If you are willing to volunteer, complete the brief survey. Plan to allow 10-15 minutes to submit. Please ensure your up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) or resumé is ready to upload (or you can email it after you complete the survey).

Task force members will complete the following assignments:

  • Review and interpret data generated from FSBPT’s survey on alternate references, including Open Educational Resources (OERs).
  • Provide subject matter expertise regarding which resource material PTs and PTAs use to support clinical decision making.
  • Develop a process for determining non-textbook reference resources that is valid and defensible.
  • Establish guidelines for the responsible use of OERs as related to NPTE items.

Volunteers must be licensed PTs or PTAs in good standing with their jurisdictional board(s). Nominees will be representative of the profession in terms of practice setting, area of expertise, geographic location, and other demographics. Nominees must be fully available to attend the meeting as scheduled above.

FSBPT will only contact you if you have been selected. FSBPT will take steps to finalize the selection of task force members and notify nominees by the end of June. FSBPT will cover all travel costs, including airfare/transportation, lodging, meals, and incidentals.

What Students Need to Know: Separate Rooms: School vs. Prometric Centers

When preparing for the NPTE, it's important to understand the differences between separate room accommodations in school settings versus Prometric test centers.

In schools, many students receive separate rooms as an accommodation to minimize distractions during exams. This setup is particularly useful in classroom or lab settings where the presence of classmates can be disruptive.

However, at Prometric test centers, the entire environment is designed to minimize distractions. Separate rooms are primarily for candidates who require assistive personnel, such as a reader or scribe, or for those who need to read aloud or have medical supplies with them while testing.

Helping your students understand the nuances regarding testing accommodations can help them better prepare for all aspects of the exam.
